Psychic talents: magic or meditation?

I am so glad that I learned to work with psychic skills in Osho’s field and not in some other setting. What I understood from him was that psychic sensitivities open up in many people when they meditate but that it’s important not to get hooked on this. If you think they make you special it will get in the way of your meditation going deeper.

“It happens almost every day here: people meditating attain to many things — for example, healing powers come very easily….And as you move upwards more and more subtle phenomena will happen, very subtle phenomena, which will make you immensely powerful. That’s why Patanjali in his Yoga Sutras makes all the yogis aware of it: beware of all kinds of siddhis, powers, because each power is tempting. And the higher it is, the more tempting it is. And the higher it is, the more ego-satisfying it is. And once the ego starts being satisfied with something, you will never attain the ultimate, you will never become a God…” Osho

When I started working as a therapist at the young age of 23, I never thought of myself as ‘psychic’. I just thought that sensitivity to energies was part of being a therapist. Only when I learnt Star Sapphire some years later was I able to identify this as a particular skill and ground it in the quality of meditation or ‘resonance’, that is the core of Star Sapphire. When I first went to Brazil in the late 1980s I remember waking up in Rio and feeling ‘Oh this place has a different atmosphere from anything I have known before’. It was not like the rational and materialistic Europe that I had grown up in.

There it felt like the psychic and spiritual sensitivities of the collective were hemmed in by bricks of materialism and science. Individual artists and healers were sensitive of course, but our collective carried the scars of the inquisition and witch burnings. It also wasn’t like the India I loved where I always felt that the psychic defences I put up in Europe melted like butter. In India it was as if the deep spiritual space that has been inhabited, familiarised and brought alive by so many masters and seekers allowed my energy bodies to un-cramp and unfurl.

But in Brazil there was something different. Though I was only in Rio I felt I could sense the presence of the Amazon jungle – something vital, sensual, green and oozing with life. I felt the presence of what I identified as magic, not meditation. As I got to know the Brazilian people more I felt that they allowed themselves to be moved by currents of energy rather than just mental control. I felt they still had collective access to channels of feeling and psychic sensitivity, like a kind of shamanic flow, although they suffered all the fears and tensions of people living in a modern economy. There was an almost pagan, carnival aspect, wild celebration, joy and vitality which is not so alive in the European tradition.

However this was not grounded in meditation and could also slip in dark directions like black magic. At that time I was leading Pulsation not Star Sapphire and I remember a few times when I had to pull the group back when their openness to energies was leading them in a dark direction. Those experiences really helped my understanding of the difference between magic and meditation as I had had shamanic past lives myself.

When many years later I started to introduce star Sapphire to Brazil I found it was a wonderful match. It was easy for the Brazilians to access their psychic sensitivities and their flowing body energies. The big growth for them was grounding this in meditation. So Brazil was part of my journey from magic to meditation and Star Sapphire in Brazil is making that journey for its’ lovers there.

In all cultures there are people who have psychic skills. Star Sapphire gives a place to these skills but the essential and primary focus is on resonance, on finding the quality that is beyond energies and stories, of magicians or of scientists whatever kind of culture we grew up in. I feel Star Sapphire can be especially helpful to rescue those of us who have got lost in the direction of magic and psychic powers in our past lives. Resting in simple presence as a session giver we invite our client to rest in it too. From there a psychic reading unfolds, indicating the personal steps which bring more meditation and joy into our client’s life. Star Sapphire is therapy holding hands with spirituality.

”So forget about all your spiritual desires. You simply be in the moment — that’s what I call being spiritual…” Osho
